Malegaon, a town at a distance of around 300 km from Mumbai, has carved a niche for itself by being the home of low budget spoofs of Bollywood and Hollywood blockbusters. With budgets ranging from as little as Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 100,000, films with noteworthy titles such as Malegaon ka James Bond, Malegaon ka Sholay, Malegaon ka Don etc. were produced and distributed locally. These spoofs, often the brainchild of the owner of a video rental store named Nasir Shaikh, generated a cult following and prompted the production of more titles.
The popularity of Malegaon's films has resulted in a wider distribution network. A 2008 documentary titled Supermen of Malegaon which followed the production of Shaikh's latest release - Malegaon ka Superman - was released to audiences worldwide.
