CV Raman declared this in 1924 to members of the University of Calcutta at a felicitation ceremony after he was conferred the Fellowship of the Royal Society. His discovery of Raman scattering in 1928 earned him the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1930. He booked passage for himself and his wife on an ocean liner to Sweden well before the Nobel announcements were made.
