Ganga and Kurma

In the early 90s, the Indian government released specially-raised flesh-eating turtles into the Ganga to eat and clear the river of partly-burned corpses from the Varanasi ghats. The programme failed as poachers captured and wiped out the turtle population (again).

These turtles apparently used to thrive in the Ganga and perform this function until not so long ago when they were eradicated by fishermen and the like.

From one of the sources: "For 10 adult turtles, it takes about two or three days to consume an entire body."
