The Mayura in Maurya Chandragupta hailed from a family or tribe of peacock (mayura/मयूर in Sanskrit) tamers whence came his practical surname of Maurya.
Sandracottus and Purushottam The Greeks referred to Chandragupta as Sandrokottos (or Sandracottus in Latin). Porus, on the other hand, is the Latinisation of Poros, Greek for Purushottam.
