Notes

According to legend, Meru was transplanted from India and placed on the Western side of Java. But it proved to be too heavy, causing the island to tip. It was therefore moved to the east leading to it breaking up and creating smaller peaks along the way. Hindus in Indonesia believe the peak of Semeru to also be an abode of Shiva.
