Kubera Manhwa

A girl with a god's name, Kubera. The god who's prophesied to bring great change into the world. The story begins with Kubera in a remote mountain village with her family, But her life turns upside down as she witnesses the fiery end to her town and everyone she knows. Accompanied by a magician of riddles, watch as world trembles at the war against the gods.

The above is the synopsis of a manhwa - a South Korean web-comic akin to Japanese manga - which has become relatively popular. The manhwa is titled Kubera and follows the life of a girl in a fantasy universe populated by gods named Agni, Kubera (of course) and so on, as well as with magicians who also carry distinctive Indian names such as Asha and Hemawati. In a similar vein, magical incantations used in the comic tend to have a Sanskrit bent with names like Hoti Agni and Bhavathi Vayu!

The bad guys comprise Asuras, Rakshasas, Yakshas, Gandharvas, Garudas and more. The anti-hero is a Gandharva named .. Gandharva who is searching for his lost daughter, Shakuntala. He is accompanied by a Garuda named Maruna.

Connotations

A number of characters from Hindu mythology have made their way into Buddhism and Jainism. With the spread of the former throughout the far east, it is not all that surprising to see a connection being made. This is especially true for Kubera who has an important presence in pantheon of oriental Buddhism.
