Indian traders who had migrated to South Africa in the late 1800s were referred to (by the whites) as 'Arabs' to differentiate them from the indentured Indian labourers.
The indentured labourers were needed by the whites for the cheap manual labour that they needed. The Indian traders, on the other hand, were not welcomed as they were seen to be stealing local jobs and business.
