Cinema reached India for the first time in 1896 thanks to The Lumière brothers who were touring the world screening short silent films. They screened six films at the Watson Hotel in Bombay.
The six films were:
- Entry of Cinématographe
- The Sea Bath: La Mer (Baignade en mer)
- Arrival of a Train: L'Arrivée d'un Train en Gare de la Ciotat
- A Demolition
- Ladies & Soldiers on Wheels
- Leaving the Factory: Sortie de l'usine Lumière à Lyon
